What is Detailing?

Detailing is a rapidly growing enthusiast and professional industry in the UK. Very few know what detailing is, where it came from and what it involves. I thought my first post would be a prime opportunity to write about what I have learnt over the years, explain the background behind detailing and what its all about.

"auto detailing is the performance of thorough cleaning, restoration and finishing of an automobile, both inside and out, to produce a show-quality level of detail" - Wikipedia. Essentially it is an extremely thorough process which takes time, attention to detail and skill. Detailing is widely mistaken for Valeting in the UK, it certainly has similar traits but goes into a much, much higher level of detail and care and takes far longer than any valet would. It certainly is not a new industry or practice, Originating in the marine world in America and Australia the detailing industry is growing rapidly on both an enthusiast and professional level.

Detailing involves many different processes, products and tools. It can consist of a simple weekly maintenance detail to maintain your vehicles appearance, to annual protection top ups to prevent swirling and general road grim build up, right the way up to several days correcting, enhancing and refining concourse winning cars to utter perfection. For more information on all the different levels of details I offer and what these involve please visit my services pages.

Not only is detailing about enhancing, restoring and protecting vehicles but its about passion, enthusiasm and knowledge. I don't know a detailer who doesn't have a background of passion for cars, car care or a general interest in the automotive industry. Detailing is about product knowledge, expertise and practical ability. Detailing is a refined art, it takes a certain eye for detail that most people don't have and most importantly a drive to achieve a perfect end result. I have spent the past few years refining my skills, learning about products and processes, using them in a variety of environments and vehicles to develop my skills to where they are currently at.

The detailing industry has a product for just about any eventuality. If protecting your vehicle is important for you there are a vast range of products which offer protection for your paintwork, wheels, trim, glass, interior, leather, cloth - you name it, it can be protected in some way. If OCD clean is what your after, every spec of dirt removed there are products available to both enthusiasts and professionals that can remove every type of dirt, be it tar, glue, iron fall out, or just a heavy build up of dirt and grime it can be removed with the right product, the right processes and the right knowledge.

Detailing is highly time consuming, highly skilled process and should not be taken lightly. It takes years of practice, knowledge and perseverance to achieve the perfect end result and is highly recommended by those that have invested.
